Without Words (Be kalbų)
The former Palace of Concerts and Sports in Vilnius was built by the Soviets in 1971 directly on the Old Šnipiškės Jewish Cemetery — its headstones removed and reused as construction material elsewhere. The building later hosted the founding congress of Sąjūdis and public mourning for those killed defending Lithuanian independence. Closed in 2004 and vacant ever since, its fate remains contested.
Walking its perimeter, Kulikauskas saw the building's enormous concrete facade differently — as a screen. Without Words is a single-channel, silent, continuous-loop video installation projecting Jan Bułhak's historical photographs of the cemetery onto the surface of the building that replaced it. Bułhak, the great chronicler of Vilnius, documented the cemetery in the early twentieth century — photographs taken little more than a hundred years ago, of a place that no longer exists.
