Albert Bierstadt painted numerous grand Yosemite Valley landscapes. With only one or two exceptions among his finished works, the Ahwahneechee — Yosemite's first people — are entirely absent. Yosemite Bark Houses responds to the omission of a people whose relationship to that valley spans thousands of years. Three paintings on transparent acrylic panels are installed directly in front of Bierstadt's canvases at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California. As viewers move to align the panels with the paintings behind them, they are invited to imagine a different Yosemite.
